Modify 600Va UPS to an Inverter (12V to AC Conversion) - Upgraded version with cooler fan auto switching

  • First step you need to remove the buzzer otherwise it will keep making noise and irritating when you are using for long hours.

Identify the buzzer and remove it safely using soldering iron and Desolder Sucker. Please refer this article which i already covered for using soldering iron and Desolder Sucker.  https://sajeetronics.blogspot.com/2021/05/soldering-basics-and-smd-soldering-on.html

  • Replace the 7 or 9 Amp Battery (Originally came with the UPS) with a CAR battery

  • Connect Car battery + and - with the UPS Battery terminal + and -

Now UPS will start produce AC voltage from AC out put terminals. But using this solution for long hours is not recommended Because MOS-FET and Transformer gets heat when it's started DC to AC conversion Process. Normal UPS is designed to Use for 15-20 min only so if you need long hours you need a proper ventilation system inside the UPS.

Fixing a cooler fan

To achieve that we need to Fix a cooler fan. But i have seen in the most of the solutions provided in the internet they have connected the 12V cooler fan directly in the 12 V Battery input line. Issue here is fan will be always working when the battery and the UPS connected. This also will drain your battery unnecessarily even UPS is in ON or OFF state. Also this will reduce the life of your cooler fan Because your battery will be always connected to your UPS and it will be working all the time.

Solution 1 : ON The Fan when UPS POWER switch on only

For this we need a 12v LED driver unit you can get  this for 300 Rs in SL market.

Connection Diagram :

Now the fan will turn on only when UPS is triggered to ON state. But here also i see an issue Normally people keep the UPS on forever because it's a standby power supply. Cooler fan will be turn on even when UPS is running on Direct Current.

So i prefer cooler fan is required to turn on only when UPS is running only with the battery backup mode not when charging or working with direct current. That way we can save some energy and Cooler fan life.

Solution 2 : Modify the circuit to Turn ON the cooler fan When UPS in on Battery Backup Mode only

we need this 12V Relay module, 7805 voltage regulator, 0.22uf and 0.1uf capacitors.

Wiring Diagram :

We have now powered the relay module and Connected the LED driver power switching via the relay module. Now when a signal coming to the relay only it will turn ON and turn ON the Cooler fan via the LED Driver.

Oki now we need a signal for this relay module to turn on the fan when UPS is running on Battery mode.

How to detect the UPS is running on battery mode ?

Can you see there are 3 LEB bulbs on the UPS surface for indicating the mode ?

So the yellow LED bulb will be indicating for battery mode. Now let's modify the above circuit to take signal to the Relay module from the battery mode LED indicator.
